This week, I show you how to recreate these adorable unicorn cupcakes. I made these last week at the same time as I made my unicorn cake. See here for that cake: http://www.keyk.de/en/blog/baking-recipes-and-ideas/unicorn-cake-wilton-horse-cake-pan
A day before baking the cupcakes, I created the ears and horn to the unicorns. I used Satin Ice's gumpaste for these. It's easier to do these types of projects with gum paste than fondant.
Using a toothpick, I stabilize the horn. The toothpick also enables me to stick the horn easily into the cupcake.
Once they had dried, I brushed gold food color on them, using Rainbow Dust metallic paint. I made chocolate chip cupcakes in gold liners by Wilton.
While those were baking, I prepared the buttercream. My recipe for that can be found here: http://www.keyk.de/en/blog/baking-recipes-and-ideas/classic-american-buttercream-recipe
I thought pastel colors would be best for this project, so I use just a touch of gel food coloring (ProGel, by RainbowDust).
Then using 4 different piping bags and colors (and tips), I pipe some decorative buttercream on each cupcake, put on the ears and stick in the horn.
All of the products used can be seen below.
