Some tips and tricks for making cookies

Here are our tips to baking cookies. We learned these tricks the hard way.

Cookies baking flour eggs butter-   When your are preparing your cookie dough, ensure that the butter is at room temperature. This helps combining all the ingredients.

-   Some recipes require you to cool the batter in the fridge for 30 minutes before rolling.  Follow the recipe closely otherwise your cookie may spread while baking.

-   More butter in a recipe leads to more spreading.  An alternative to butter is shortening.

-   White sugar bakes crispier than brown sugar.

-   Use unsalted butter and larger eggs.

-   Leave 2 - 4 cm space between your cookies.

-   Use good quality ingredients to add more delicious flavor to your cookies.

-   Use parchment paper to bake your cookies on.  If you would like to use less butter and are worried about cookies sticking to your parchment paper, use a silicone mat instead.

How should I decorate my cookies?

There are many ways to decorate your cookie.  You can decorate your cookies by glazing them, applying frosting or piping royal icing.

-   A sugar glaze is typically made of confectionery sugar and some milk.  It is easy to make and therefore ideal for beginners.  If you need the consistency thicker, add more confectionery sugar.  If you need it more fluid, add more milk.  With some food coloring, cookie glazes can help you create colorful cookies with ease. While sugar glazes are easy to make, they tend to spread on a cookie and do not dry hard.

-   You can frost your cookies with anything, ranging from a buttercream to Nutella.

-   Royal icing is largely made of egg white or meringue powder.  It is more challenging to pipe than a sugar glaze, but dries hard and does not spread on a cookie.

In our shop, you can find meringue powder to create your own royal icing, as well as pre-made royal icing mixes.

How are fondant cutters different from cookie cutters?

We do not see a noteworthy difference between cookie cutters and those for fondant.  They are generally similar sizes and can be made of some type of plastic or metal.

Unicorn Cookie CutterWe like to use our cutters interchangeably.  The only difference we are aware of is what happens after the fondant has been cut.  Whereas cookie dough is cut and then placed straight on parchment paper, fondant is generally shaped and modeled after being cut out.  For example, you may use a peony cutter to cut out petals of fondant.  Generally, your work does not end there and you continue modeling the petals to give it a 3 dimensional shape.
